eluvium (aka matthew cooper) returns with a new ep entitled "when i live by the garden and the sea". it was released on tuesday via temporary residence. the 4 tracks on the ep combine the elements of all his past releases (ambient drones, fuzzy washes of guitar, sparse piano, etc.). check out this track which features a snippet of dialog by tom hanks taken from the burbs.

isis and aereogramme - delial

if you don't know anything about konkurrent's "in the fishtank" series here's a brief explaination: bands are given 2 days in the studio and the freedom to record whatever they like musically. the 14th installment of the series will be released sometime late in september. prog-metal meets epic rock this time around as they've chosen the unusual pairing of isis and aereogramme. the ep contains 3 tracks that clock in around 25 minutes and it sounds pretty much how you'd expect a collaboration between these bands to sound. some parts heavy, some parts ambient, all parts good.

angelo badalamenti - twin peaks theme

i'm obsessed with all things david lynch but lately it's been his tv show twin peaks which unfortunately aired when i was too young to be interested. i've only seen season one along with the prequel movie fire walk with me since they are all that's available on dvd. however, rumor has it that the complete series will be released sometime before the end of the year. one of my favorite things about the show is the music that angelo badalamenti provides for the soundtrack. check out the main theme..it's dark and dreamy.

old crow medicine show - minglewood blues

old crow medicine show is an unironic bluegrass/country band from nashville. on august 29th, their new album "big iron world" will be hitting the shelves thanks to the folks at nettwerk. these guys do things the old fashioned way by using banjos, fiddles, upright bass and harmonicas to create their traditional sound. highly recommended.

strike anywhere - allies

anyone who has lost faith in punk rock obviously hasn't heard richmond, va's strike anywhere. on september 5th, fat wreck chords will be putting out the band's third full length entitled "dead fm". for those unfamiliar, they play melodic political (but not preachy) punk that is so anthemic each song sounds like one giant hook. these guys make me proud to call virginia my home. here's my favorite track off the album.

richard buckner - town

i remember first hearing richard buckner about 6 years ago when i was just getting into alt-country and being completely blown away by his music. on september 12th, merge records will be releasing his 8th album "meadow" and it proves he hasn't lost that ability one bit. for the recording, buckner enlisted help from steven goulding (of the waco brothers) along with guided by voices alumni doug gillard and kevin march. recommended for fans of sun kil moon, jay farrar and pete yorn.

jim noir - i me you i'm your

i'll admit it, i'm a sucker for good pop music. jim noir creates just that, sunshine-pop that you'd swear was originally penned by the beatles, the beach boys or the kinks. tomorrow, barsuk records will be releasing his album "tower of love", which collects a couple ep's previously released overseas along with 2 brand new songs. here's one of my favorite tracks from it.

dysrhythmia - appeared at first

dysrhythmia is a 3 piece instrumental prog/metal band hailing from philadelphia. their third proper album "barriers and passages" was released back in may on relapse records. if you like the more chaotic moments of sonic youth and fugazi or the math-metal stylings of bands like don caballero, then this may be your new favorite band. highly recommended.

howlin' rain - death prayer in heaven's orchard

sorry i haven't been updating, i think i just needed to take a little break. howlin' rain is a 3 piece lead by ethan miller (of comets on fire) and also features john moloney (of sunburned hand of the man). on may 23rd, birdman records released the band's self titled debut. their sound is a mixture of pysch/rock/folk/blues/funk/country that should appeal to fans of the grateful dead and creedance clearwater revival.
